Entrants in the national AIB Professional Excellence In Building Awards are those individuals who have received either a High Commendation or Professional Excellence Awards at a regional Chapter level. In 2008 there were a record number of entries which were judged against the following key criteria.

Degree of project difficulty, difficulties encountered and overcome relating to design, regulatory requirement, the site and materials.
Management methods and techniques including overall management of the project and waste minimization procedures
Innovations developed to overcome difficulties
Relationship with the client, architect, authorities, community and workforce.
Quality of the completed project, completion on time and within budget in the context of the overall standard of work.

A judging panel of distinguished professionals associated with the building and construction industry judge the entries against the criteria. In addition to High Commendations and Professional Excellence Awards the panel may select an individual to be the AIB Building Professional of the Year if the entrant has shown outstanding excellence.

The judging panel is Chaired by Mr Peter Fardoulys AM LFAIB.
