The Bachelor of Applied Science (Construction Management) offered by RMIT University provides a solid foundation for the construction
management, project management and quantity surveying professions.
The average contact time
is approximately twenty house per week and is made up of lectures,
tutorials, workshops and site visits. Students are required to undertake
twenty hours of private study each week and complete eighty working
days of practical experience. The work experience may be undertaken
in Australia or overseas and does not have to be taken consecutively.
Graduates may undertake various roles:
- For a builder or subcontractor
supervising construction work;
- As a quantity surveyor
providing planning and scheduling and/or contract administration;
- In cost control or
co-ordination support for construction works;
- As a consultant providing
time, cost and quality budgeting and control advice for a project
management group; or
- For a large corporation
with in-house development expertise in any of the above capacities.
Graduates of the Diploma
of Building who have been successful in gaining a place
in the Bachelor of Applied Science (Construction Management ), may
be eligible to apply for exemptions of one to two years, leaving
an additional two to three years to complete the undergraduate program.
Construction managers
and construction economists work in engineering, architecture, economics
and law. They organise and manage a vast number of people in the
building procurement process and may be involved in building high-rise
office buildings and apartments, factories, hotels, houses, hospitals
or tourist facilities. They may also be involved in the refurbishment
and renovation of existing buildings. Construction managers require
good people management skills and an ability to work in teams.
