AIB membership provides individual practitioners with a means of identifying themselves as building professionals. The use of post-nominals and a licence to use the AIB Coat of Arms (crest) are a valued privilege restricted exclusively to certain grades of AIB membership.
Post-nominals

Use of Armorial Bearings
The Institute encourages use the armorial bearings (crest) under certain conditions. These include that the crest may only be used with the words "The Australian Institute of Building" and that the armorial bearings must be clearly identified as those of the Institute and not of a member. An example of the use permitted by members includes (the second being the 'corporatised' version):
The AIB armorial bearings may be used by an organisation on letterheads, reports, promotional material, helmets, signboards, notice boards and similar documentation provided that for the organisation involved:
- where a partnership, at lease one partner is an AIB Corporate Member (grades of Member or Fellow); or
- where a company, at least one director is an AIB Corporate Member (grades of Member or Fellow).
If you have any doubts regarding the entitlement to use the crest please contact the AIB national office before it is used. A copy of the crest is available by sending a request to ausbuild@aib.org.au
Term 'Chartered Building Professional'
A Corporate Member of AIB, that is a Member or Fellow is entitled to use the term 'Chartered Building Professional' only in association with their name and not their firm or company. This entitlement for Member and Fellows is derived from the fact that AIB exists by virtue of its Royal Charter.
Members are permitted to use the term so long as the member maintains a current financial membership. The exception is where the AIB Council has bestowed the honour of a Life Fellowship on an individual, where the entitlement remains throughout their life.
