Australia’s building and construction industry is one of the largest segments of the Australian economy. By any measure, whether it be as a segment of GNP, total employment or investment figures this industry sector is readily accepted as having an influence on both our business and personal interests. For more than fifty years the Australian Institute of Building (AIB) has played a significant role in safeguarding the interests of building professionals. The role of AIB and the focus of the Construct journal is best reflected in the following statement made in 1957 at the Institute’s first annual conference:
In the long run, standards are kept, whether by individuals or groups of men, by pressure
from within … you are such an association, formed to provide a joint conscience, to set upon and insist on standards of competence, skill and integrity in your profession … you aim to make membership of this Institute not only a guarantee of quality and competence, but also a badge of commercial integrity.
Field Marshal Sir William Slim GCB GCMG GCVO GBE DSO MC
Governor General of Australia
