This information is provided to determine the qualification requirements for obtaining a building contractor’s licence in Tasmania.

There are currently 3 types of building licences available in Tasmania.

Low Rise

Building work (other than specialist electrical, plumbing, drainage, gas fitting and active fire service trade building work) on  Class 1 and Class 10 buildings – plus Building work on classes 2 to 9 buildings with a gross floor area not exceeding 2000 m2, but not including Type A or Type B construction.

Tasmanian Licensing – Low Rise Licence – QLD University List
Tasmanian Licensing – Low Rise Licence – SA and NT University List
Tasmanian Licensing – Low Rise Licence – VIC and TAS University List
Tasmanian Licensing – Low Rise Licence – WA University List

Medium Rise

Building work (other than specialist electrical, plumbing, drainage, gas fitting and active fire service trade building work) to a maximum of 3 storeys, but not including Type A construction on Classes 4 to 9 buildings.

Open Licence

Building Work (other than specialist electrical, plumbing, drainage, gas fitting and active fire service trade building work).

Tasmanian Licensing – Open Licence – SA and NT University List

In the case of each of the above 2 years relevant supervisory experience is also required.
